White Point Swash
Dear Residents:
We received final approval for remediation measures on the swash from OCRM and DHEC today; this will allow us to proceed with opening up the swash. The Corps of Engineers has approved opening up the swash, but approval for the overall project will not come until May.
Horry County dispatched track hoes and trucks and began excavating early this morning. They are planning to excavate a flow path 150 ft. wide which should prevent a redirection or filling in of the new swash path. Work is proceeding quickly; the swash should be drained by Tuesday and have water flowing in and out with the tides.
The County wisely barricaded approaches from both directions so onlookers are unable to get too close. The view is great from the Cabana or from North Beach Plantation.
WMBF News conducted an interview and filmed the swash last Thursday. It aired this morning and will probably run again, later today.
Other local stations WPDE and WBTW filmed and conducted interviews this morning and this afternoon; the reporters were able to get some good shots of the swash and the excavating.
We expect the Corps of Engineers approval of the ten- year permit in mid May. Unfortunately, since Turtle Nesting Season is May 1 - October 31, this will be too late for us to restore the dunes this spring. Removal of the sandbar and restoration of the dunes will not happen before December.

Fire Wise Event Packet with download files
Dear Town of Briarcliffe Acres Property Owner:
The Town of Briarcliffe Acres, in cooperation with the South Carolina Forestry Commission, will conduct our annual Fire Wise Event on April 28th this year. This popular event allows our residents the opportunity to discard their yard waste at the curb, have it hauled away, and to receive guidance in Fire Wise procedures which protect their homes and our community. The Town has received a grant from the South Carolina Forestry Commission to help pay for this activity.
Yard waste will be recycled and may consist of the following: Stockpiled backyard debris, tree branches no larger than 4 inches in diameter, dead plants and shrubs, raked debris from forest or yards, paper bags of debris, grass or leaves (maximum of 20 paper bags per lot – NOTE: The land fill banned plastic bags in June 2017. (See enclosed flyer re paper bags)
On Saturday, April 28th, a contractor will travel through Town with a backhoe and trucks to retrieve and transport debris to the landfill. The operation will continue on Monday and subsequent days until the clean-up is finished. All debris is to be placed on the curb in front of your home. No debris is allowed to be placed in the medians. If you have no other options, call the Town Office for permission to place in the median.
The Town is able to hold this event from a grant issued; it is a matching grant, with the Town's costs matched up to a point, including volunteer hours. We ask that you record the hours it takes to clean your property and your landscaper’s costs in preparation for this event. Your participation is vital in the success of the event. Please complete the attached form and return it to the Town office. The recorder sheets must be returned to the Town office no later than Thursday, April 26th. If we have not received your form, the debris will not be picked up from your lot. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated and is key to a successful event.
The Town recognizes the need to remove yard waste as we have a permanent burning ban. The permanent burning ban was put into effect shortly after the 2009 Barefoot wildfires; the Town moved quickly to become a Fire Wise Community. This annual event is contingent upon grant money. You may choose to enroll in the voluntary yard debris program through Waste Industries for weekly collection (application is on Town website under Services tab).

White Point Swash
Due to the complete stop of flow in and out of White Point Swash in the last few days, the Town requested a meeting with all interested parties to discuss options. Tuesday morning representatives from Horry County and its consultant, North Myrtle Beach, the Army Corps of Engineers, the Town of Briarcliffe Acres, and Briarcliffe Acres Association attended. A representative from Ocean and Coastal Resource Management (OCRM) did not attend.
The lack of flow and flushing of the water in the swash area has resulted in increased pollution and higher salinity in that area. Plant life is also dying.
Although we received permission from the Corps of Engineers to open up the channel, drain the swash down to normal levels, and permit water exchange in the swash to restart during the meeting, OCRM did not approve the action. OCRM is close to approving our application for restoration of the dunes and swash to their historical position and level and are hesitant to approve a temporary measure.
OCRM and DHEC are in discussions today. If they can complete the approval process for the original permit request within the next two or three weeks, then it is beneficial to wait for that before we reopen the swash. We should know Wednesday or Thursday where they stand. If their approval process is going to extend into May, then we feel certain they will issue an approval for us to reopen the swash in the next week or so.
We expect the Corps of Engineers approval of the ten- year permit in mid May. Fire Wise Event - April 28, 2018
Dear Briarcliffe Acres Property Owner:
We are pleased to announce that the Town of Briarcliffe Acres, in cooperation with the South Carolina Forestry Commission and the North Myrtle Beach Fire Department, will conduct its annual Fire Wise Event on Saturday, the 28th of April.
Debris pickup will begin on the 28th and continue until complete. If you or your contractor choose to begin clean-up for Fire Wise earlier than the 14th, please stage it on your lot, away from the Town’s right of ways.
The contractor will be trimming right of ways and the canopies the week before Fire Wise begins.
More complete details will be sent to you and posted on the Town website in March.
